Well I wasn't worried about the demagnetize part but the actual
damage to the strip and its reader. There was not an obviouss way to
protect them from physical damage in the views they had posted.

magnetic base isn't a problem. Chips shouldn't mess up the tape, except that they will interfere with the sensor's operation. Do they allow mounting the strip to a metal surface? Seems like that might interfere.
