It takes a pretty strong field to demagnetize magnetic tape, if the strips are made of the same magnetic material. A horseshoe magnet won't do it as the field isn't strong enough. A tiny chip of the same magnet might demagnetize a small spot (much more concentrated field). So I suspect a magnetic base isn't a problem. Chips shouldn't mess up the tape, except that they will interfere with the sensor's operation. Do they allow mounting the strip to a metal surface? Seems like that might interfere.

I asked about interference from nearby magnetic fields and the possibility of demagnetizing the strip. The rep. said that it is not a problem. I do not know the output from the sensor but would suspect it to be a quadrature type system. The catalog states that "there are two possiblities for processing these values: direct display on the machine (via an electronic display unit) or data transfer to a master control via standard incremental interfaces (phase-shifted square signals)" The sensor has to be within 2 mm of the mag. strip to work.
