Hello Graham,
Sorry, I missed this post before.
The taig mills are tough, good quality machines. I have seen and used
both the sherline and taig mills. It's a hard choice even if you have
seen 'em.
I like the Sherline company and their motor/motor control is the best
of the bunch, IMO. The taig company has a different style (more
folksy) but both companies have long experience with industrial
users. Sherline documentation is generally better; taig seems often
to expect you already to know how to use/do something. Their
industrial users DID know how... (This is changing with the web and
there are some good taig suppliers like Nick carter who have websites
and provide good support)
Taig offers a fully cnc mill with superCAM as the controller.
Supercam has some nice features, but I had a buggy copy (years ago;
so please do not base your choice on this old info) and haven't
gotten past my initially poor impression. Dennis Bohlke's super-
tech.com site has LOTS of info on the program.
Sherline has not yet offered a "turnkey cnc mill", but so many have
done so that it won't be hard to retro-fit if that's your intention.
Lastly, MaxNC has a lot of very happy users of their cnc mills. The
CL version is fast and is being used for commercial purposes. The
company support is poor to non-existent, but the user group and
dealers are doing a good job. The lower price maxNC mills are SLOW...
Hope this helps.
P.S. The taig construction is steel; sherline and maxNC are aluminum.
