Therre are a fair number of machines on the market that do just that.
Bridgeport makes a lathe called EZ path; Harrison and Nardini make similar
models.
Servo (the company, not the motor) makes bolt-on "smart motors" that claim
this capability too.
I've never used one of these machines (the Servo equipped mill), but I have
tried a lathe.
It works OK, but I find the use of manual pulse generators to make axis
movements very weird to get used to.
It completely robs you of the "feel" of manual machining.
