Iain and Fred,

FWIW, I used to support two VDF's with similar attributes. Iain, one model
in particular
had a Micro-Swinc CNC ( PDP-11 based ) circa. 1977. I remember the center
bay door was completely
covered with Ice-Cube style relays. And I thought they were 48Vdc but I may
be wrong. The other
VDF was a beauty, she was a slant-bed and had a Fanuc-15. The control was
not as unusual as was
the way the Operator Pendant was mounted to the machine. As I remember, the
Pendant ( CRT, keypad etc. )
travelled on a set of rails aprox. 2-3 feet from the base of the machine.
The rails were mounted parallel
to the -Z- axis had the entire pendant could roll from one end of the
machine to the other. Most
Pendants are supported at eye level and are fixed rigid or on a support arm
of sorts.
I never saw a Pendant mounted like this again. And I often wondered if the
japanese Okuma Lathes ( LC,LR,LU )
and the Warner and Swasey TiTan ( among many ) were model after these
machines.
All in all very nice. We really need a 'rogues' gallery of pictures so
that everyone can see the
diversity of machines that were and still are out there.
Best Wishes to All, Wally
