I have an ancient round-ram Bridgeport knee mill that I converted
to CNC. I used old GE axis drives out of a PC board drilling machine
for X and Y, and built my own Z-axis drive. I made my own servo
amps, and use EMC for the control. This has been up and running
since mid 1999.

I had planned on eventually CNC-ing my 12" Craftsman lathe, but have
lucked into a 15" Sheldon lathe, which I'm now rebuilding. This is a really

worthy machine for a retrofit, so after the rebuild is complete, I will
have to start figuring out how to do it. Unlike the Craftsman, this one
has enough space and features inside that I think I can make a
really decent manual / CNC combo lathe out of it without it turning into
a real kluge. It already has a DRO, and I hope to reuse the scales for CNC.
