Marcus,

The larger Flashcut machine is based on the Grizzly G1006 benchtop
mill/drill - The retrofit of the X and Y axes is nearly identical to that
published in HSM for the G1005 mill/drill with the exception of the addition
of a 2" extension block to the front of the Y axis and the different lengths
of the threaded ball screw stock - This extension block restores the Y axis
travel otherwise lost by the length of the ball nuts - Please note that
there is a lot of "specmanship" that goes on between the importers of these
machines and that the published axis travels are in many cases way out of
line with reality - The same goes for horsepower - If anybody thinks that
they can actually absorb 1-1/2 or 2 hp effectively in the spindle of a
mill/drill they woefully ignorant of the reality of machining operations -

The Z-axis retrofit of the G1006 is different from that of the G1005 because
I put the motor on the right side of the head instead of the left side -
There were several reasons for this but probably the most salient was the
ability to use as many common parts from the G1005 retrofit as practical -

As mentioned the G1006 detailed drawings will be published also in the HSM
column - They are currently not in a publishable form being largely
un-dimensioned but scale AutoCAD drawings or hand written notes so I cannot
realistically furnish them to anyone just now -

One of the challenges of doing these retrofits is attempting to design
components that will fit as many of the mill/drills as possible - Even when
you buy the same model number from the same source (As G1006 from Grizzly,
for instance) there are areas that I swear are made with a hand drill and a
body grinder - Some of the tapped holes are so crooked that they have to
have been done "offhand" - I try to keep a list of dimensions for about 10
or 20 machines and then review them and redesign the components as required
to try to make them fit the range of variation - Only then can I make
components up in "batches" of 10 or 20 sets and possibly offer kits - Up to
that time everything is done on a "one off" basis - I've done about 10 of
the G1006 machines now and have enough data to finalize the components -

Don't know if this answers your questions or not -
