Do you have any local metalworking clubs? If you do, then they are
a great resource for projects like this. I am continually amazed
at what people have in their garages (mine included!)

If not, and you have specific plans for pieces, you might want to
try posting on rec.crafts.metalworking. Sometimes guys there will
do small jobs to pick up a few bucks.

As to expense, generally, time = money, so if you want to do it right
away, it will cost $$$. If you want to scrounge, use a lot of creativity
and generally have fun on the way, it can be done for relatively low
cost.
