Tim, if you look a bit closer at the saddle and table , you will see
plates that cover the bottom of the way (Or you DARN WELL SHOULD
HAVE)
these plates are generally called keeper plates. the side in contact
with the way is scraped for oil retention and the side that bolts to
the moving element is ground or scraped to allow for the correct
clearance.
