Generally you find 2 kinds of adjustments. A conical gibs and B
adjustment by shim.
The gibs often are used only on side guidance. The adjustment by shim is
frequent on the clamping part. The third way C by set screws adjusting a
gib you will find only on weak low cost machines.
You generally leave a very small play of 0,001" =0,02 mm for the oil.
On knee mills and vertical guides the clamping guides are the first to
wear because of little bearing surface.and hanging load. So often you
just need to grind them down.and mount again. For perfect fit it is
always recomendable to handscrape and acieve a perfect sliding motion.
(check by pushing by hand = A motor will fool you)
