To minimize backlash and friction.

Your application will dictate your need. If you want or need high
positional accuracy then your options will lead you to ball screws
and Pre-loaded ball nuts. There are other factors as well in
getting high accuracy. How you hold the screw. How you drive the
screw etc.

If you don't need to hold a tight tolerance for positional
repeatability then you can get away with maybe Acme screws. They do
make pre-loaded Acme nuts as well.

Accuracy only costs more money, so it's up to you.
