Gained should be just as possible as lost steps.

Lost steps happen when you send the steps faster than the motor can respond.
Similarly, if you were to get the motor going really fast, and then all of
sudden you just stop sending steps, then it's entirely believable that the
motor will continue to move even though no steps are sent (due to momentum).

Which is why deceleration is as important as acceleration.
