Hi John,
If you want a super quick fix, put a pully on it and wrap a sturdy
string around it a few times, then hand a free pulley on the back and
a window sash weight (little one) on the string. just a simple
counter balance.
I am almost positive you can get a replacement from Sears. They make
just about every parts that can be used direct or adapted very easily.
