A couple of thoughts - reed switches are unlikely to be as precise as
mechanical or optical switches as the strength of the magnetic field could
be affected by the mass of a steel job on the work table and, more
importantly, the magnet will collect all the steel swarf and splinters and
make itself into a furry mess.
