Years ago I tested some little no-name reed switches I had, using the
small approx 3/16 rare earth magnets Radio Shack sells, they would trip
consistently within about .0002. This was repeatable within a distance
range of at least .100 variation between magnet and switch. At some
point it does change of course, but small rare earth magnets will give
all the repeatability anyone could want. They'll also do a great job of
making ferrous fur balls too...<G>
