Mathew,

If you find the pulley/counterweight arrangement a problem once you
start making chips, you should consider installing gas-lifts. I
purchased two 175lb x 16" travel gas lifts from McMaster Carr for about
$15 ea and fitted them on the sides of the knee, near the front. I have
previously posted a pic (which is still there in photos - "NEMA 42 -
Gas Springs") I've found that even with the motor turned off or even
removed, the knee still stays in position. Nice & safe!

Let me know if you need more info about how to install them. I'm sure
you'll be focussing on driving your Z axis first. Are you driving the
knee or the quill?
