I would go simple.
The parallel port out from the PC is connected to the mother board by
a simple 25DB to 26pin dual row header. These are easily found at
any computer shop, if you like to dumpster dive they are free with
each old computer.
With that you get a nice mounting plate. it will fit in the back of
any PC enclosure quite readily. then, all one needs it to connect
that 26 pin to some form of cable. an easy solution is to strip the
ribbon cable and connect wire extentions on those wires.
another simple method is to get a DB25 connector mount that on your
box and wire from there.
either way, a standard DB25 to DB25 cable can be used. that way, you
can go from 3 to 6 to 10 to 15 to 20 to 25 to 50 feet cables to see
what will work and what will crash and burn and cables are dirt cheap.
I can't imagine making multiple parallel cables when they are so
cheap.
If you want to run the 5v from the PC in the same cable, you would
need to identify which wires in the ribbon cable are ground, make
sure your connectors don't have a jumper for all the grounds, if it
does, you need to isolate your wire for 5V.
I found that some supposed 25 conductor cables are not, and share all
8 ground pins on one wire. The cable insulation should be stamped
with the number of conductors.
