I thought I mentioned it to you before that my mill is the same as
yours. I have a 600 oz in servo motor driving a 3/1 ratio timing pulley
mounted on the knee drive shaft. I have had this set up for several
years and there is no problems that have resulted from this
modification. I think I sent you pictures of the Z axis motor mount. I
sometimes run the knee all day long with an incredible number of up and
down moves. The motor barely gets warm and there is no measured wear on
the knee or acme lead screw. It will be the simplest way to cnc your Z
axis. Just remember to may sure the the oilers for the knee are filled.

Thanks for the comprehensive input. My Enco mill is not quite that
heavy, but I was concerned about moving the knee up an down. Was the 4th
axis on that Tree Mill the quill? My biggest concern is motorizing
that, with positive control.
