  Reducing the amperage will only derate your holding torque that you
already have more than enough of. It will not affect your running torque
once you hit the point where the motor inductance is the the actually
current limit. So, by reducing your amperage below what the max is for
your setup you will not affect your rapid feeds at all.
What Dan is telling you is that the rating given on a motor is usually
for unipolar (half coil) and that if you connect as bipolar series you
need to drop the current. If you look at the Powermax II ratings you
will see there list different current levels for unipolar, bipolar
series, and bipolar parallel for the same motor. They all take different
amounts of current. My above statement is explaining why running below
the max current for the configuration normally does not affect you at
all.
