Another very common mistake is that the per phase amperage rating for a
common 6 wire motor is for the unipolar wiring configuration. However
most guys are using bipolar choppers set in the bipolar series
configuration so you should set the current for 71.5% of the rated
current. Thus a 6 wire motor that was rated at 2Amp when used with a
bipolar chopper driver in series wiring should be set for 2A X .715 =
1.43 amps.

If you have near recent Gecko G2xx drives you would have idle current
reduction. That should keep the motors from getting very hot at all when
they are idling. You did not mention what voltage you are using or the
current you are set for. If the voltage is pushing up towards 25X over
voltage or your current is set too high you will get lots of heat.
