Just a thought, but if you use one of your carriages (i.e. the moving
part) and use it to straddle the butt joint, you could rely on the
internal precision of the carriage to align your two pieces of rail. If
when you tighten everything down and you find the carriage won't roll
smoothly across the joint, you may have to shim one side slightly or
just reposition one part.
