First of all I really appreciate your statement about the cost of
the high end software, but I was sending out the files because of
problems another person in the group had in trying to use AutoCAD
(which he either had, or had access to) to make engravable text. My
employers had the packages listed above and that was the approach the
company used. I made the file and sent it out to all, in case someone
else had the problem. I was just trying to be helpful by using the
software available to me at work. I was completely unfamiliar with the
Desk Engrave software - perhaps it has been mentioned in the group
before I joined.

Oh, and something that may be a shock to you (it surprised me):
Sometimes old software is thrown out when a company goes to a
different kind of software. I had a high school student, working after
school at a engineering firm, who was given disks, books, & paperwork
when they discarded AutoCAD R14 and Mechanical Desktop to go to a
different kind of CAD software. Perhaps like "obsolete" machine tools
rolled off for scrap metal? You have to be in the right place at the
right time (seems like I always "just miss it").
