It would seem to me that a 3:1 reduction for any decent stepper motor should
give you all the power you would need. What is the torque rating of the
motor you are using? My guess would be that with a 400 to 600 oz/in motor
you would have plenty of power, that is 1200 to 1800 oz/in given the belt
reduction. What are you drilling with this thing anyway? What size drill
bits are you using? An Oriental Motors PK299-01A is rated at 611 oz/in or
you could move up to a PK2913-01A which is rated at 916 oz/in which would
give you 1833 or 2748 oz/in respectfully. I would think that either of
these would handle a drill press quite nicely.
