Dave, Jeff,
This mechanical method might give considerable "contact bounce", giving
you false indications in stepper motion. What is wanted is a digital
signal. a push button, and one-shot (TTL logic) of some sort would be
much better. Get a cheap light flasher kit with a 555 from RS or a
local electronics (kit) store, and you'll be good to go. Ramsey and
others even have low cost stepper kits which can give you some digital
signals to work with (they can even DRIVE the steppers they're intended
to be used with).
Yes, use TurboCNC to supply you test signals!!
