Yet another NEMA 42 roadblock

I'm still fighting the battle of my unmarked NEMA 42's

I was all set to hook them up and I got a connection diagram from
Superior Electric on their 8 connection stepper motors to make sure I
got the polarity of the windings right. They show windings from
terminals 1-6, 2-3, 4-8 and 5-7

I have continuity between:

1-6, 2-8, 4-7, 3-5

I know that proper polarity is important and specific windings are
important, but don't know how to proceed from here to identify the
terminals without opening the stepper (which I understand is a no-no).

Please help.
