The problem with the method in the link is that the original motors were
100 steps per rev and used the 10/1 ratio gears. The motor was able to
turn up at very high speed. If you build a motor mount like the one in
the picture from the below link then use a standard 2/1 ratio stepper
your speed will be half as fast as the original but will have more
power. I have a 2400 that I did a similar conversion on and am not
happy with the speed. When I get a little time I plan to replace the
steppers with a servo motor so I can get 30 IPM+.
Otherwise, mechanically those are great little machines much better than
the maxnc/taig or sherlines.

timing belts and pulleys are the way to go. The original gears
