Hi guys;
I'm sure the mold makers of the list can add detail here, so I'll just mention
a couple basic points. Depending on a number of factors, including what kind of
mold/fill material is bring used, the fill material can form a small concave or
convex shape at the rim of the mold. Temperature is a notorious cause of this
as the surface area begins to set first, and then the center of the fill
material cools, causing shrinkage, pulling some of the surface down into the
mold, or at least in that direction. An obvious solution is to make the mold a
little large, or overfill it a smidge, and then machine off the excess, but for
the idea you express below, this could, in some cases at least, be self
defeating.
