Alan,
DeskCNC is a little bit confusing product as it is really 3 different
parts. There is the DeskCNC software which is a CAM software bundle that
generates g-code from .dxf, .stl, gerber, and bitmap files. The software
is also capable of being used as a CNC controller program if you get the
external board. There are 2 possible external boards. The basic unit is
a controller only and it outputs step and direction signal from the
controller and accepts limit and home switched. It connects to the PC
through a serial cable or an optional USB cable. To generalize the
output from it is the same step and direction that you get from the
parallel port on most other controllers. The second external board is a
combined controller (same functions and connection to the computer as
the basic unit) with a 3 axis Allegro based driver board integrated on
the board (same chips as the Xylotex). It also has the power supply and
rectifier built on the board. It is probably the easiest route to CNC
until Jeff and I get the Xylotex turn key box ready. Using DeskCNC with
the combined controller/driver board you connect the board to the
computer with a serial cable and you connect a 24 VAC or less
transformer and your stepper motors. You now have a running CNC setup.
