Anders,
Save yourself the grief. I am running XP so I fired up Hyperteminal. The
first thing it asks is if you want to make it your default TELNET terminal.
Telnet is one of the TCP/IP protocols and will not work for you if you are
still connected via rs232 on a com port. When you are connected to the
internet you are using TCP/IP over a single connection whether it be dial
up, cable or ADSL. You then have a number of discreet functions you can
perform such as HTTP (Hyper Text Terminal Protocol), FTP (File Transfer
Protocol), Telnet ((Terminal Protocol). Each of these functions tries to
establish a connection with a well known port on a server that speaks the
particular protocol. When you goto to a web sight your browser
automagically 'sends please respond to this' to port 80 at the IP address
derived from DNS (Directory Naming Service) another TCP/IP protocol. Telnet
does a similar thing using port 23 if I remember correctly. FTP has a
commonly recognized port as do each ot the other protocols. Therefore using
Hyperterminal is going to use the internet to establish a session. It will
not try to anything local to your machine without some locally accessible
network supporting telnet.
