Hi Bill

I believe SuSE-8.2 ships with gcc-3.3 - I have not tried using this compiler
for a realtime kernel, nor do I know if it is recommended for the task.
The reason for using a virgin source is due to the various distributions
making subtle (and not so subtle) changes to the kernel, either to fix
percieved problems, or add "enhancements" - Both of which will cause the
realtime patches to fail at some point.

If you are nervous at the prospect of patching and compiling a kernel,
perhaps the best thing to try is the new BDI-Live CD. This is still beta (and
needs further testing), but it does give you the chance to try EMC without
trashing your hard drive. It does require a reasonably fast CPU and plenty of
memory (600MHz & 128Mb RAM). At present Nvidia video cards are not supported,
but this should be fixed by the weekend..
Download it from http://emc.obstinate.org

Regards, Paul.
