It may be easier to use an old PC for the electronics, but this thread started because of a shortage of space and the consideration that a PC is more than a little over-kill. If a PIC that is reprogrammable is used the software is not a issue as it can be rewritten. While the bugs and the developemenrt work is being done the PIC need not be put in the final position and can be left in the program develope board which is indeed plugged into a PC via the parallel port.
