Using a 16/16-16 tap for a 5/8" ballnut with the right sized hole
results in a *good* thread and a good fit for a 5/8" ballnut. At least
it did for us.
The 1.137" threads on the 3/4" ballnuts are a different story. We cut
threads for them with a 1-3/16 tap. Yes, that thread is sloppy, but we
lock it with a set screw and it holds the ball nut fine. We, however,
DO NOT use that thread for adjusting backlash as it is too loose to do
that. I think that is what Bill is referring to when he said his thread
failed.
