Assuming it has the conventional gearing to do low speeds, then you may well
be able to go with a smaller motor. The one place where it might be a big
problem is if the DC control and motor were used to do the job of the back
gears. In that case, the AC induction motor might run really hot of it had
to deliver heavy torque at, say, 300 RPM on the motor shaft. Did the
original DC motor have external forced-air cooling?
