I suspect that buried inside any commercial controller today has a
microcomputer of some sort in its midst. If you use commercial
quality fixings (limit switches, cable harness, relays, etc.) and
decent software (ie: MACH2, etc.) and a good, well designed PC (not
an antiquated piece of junk), and if you have a well thought out
control sequence, I see no reason why a PC shouldn't be equivalent to
a commercial dedicated unit. All other things being equal (and
frequently they are not -hobbyists tend to cut corners either out of
ignorance or bugetary considerations), and an equivalent set of
controls, concentration should be on the CNC software you select.
This will determin how close your solution comes to what you would
expect if you purchased a dedicated controller.
