Greg,
You would be surprised how minimal the machine has to be to meet your
requirements.I use A pentium I 166 to run my PCB Mill. Many versions
of Linux are available for free.EMC can be gathered from the web for
free.

This aproach requires that you
1. Find an old motheboard, locate memory , vid card ........etc
2. Download multiple modules and linux
3. Download a lot of EMC
4. Make it all work.

Simple enough.
I have a stack of old motherboards and piles of cards. Most of this
stuff has run for years. Remember what this stuff cost back then.It
was built to last.I have a 860 meg hard drive that still works
flawlessly. I would be willing to put together something for you as a
package in the $100 dollar range.
