Ah, yes. So the CD boots, the install goes, but in the end you don't
have a system that will boot itself completely from the hard disk.
That sounds WAY too familiar! And, LILO is not the most obvious
in the way it works. If the boot track doesn't get put together right,
or if a critical part of the kernel lays beyond cylinder 1024, it won't
boot on many machines. The trick is to put a 50 MB partition right
at the beginning of the disk, and link it to mount point /boot. The
kernel, boot scripts, and a few other things like initrd.img get put there,
so that any BIOS can boot from it. Then, you can put the rest of
everything in one partition linked to mount point "/".

Do you know how to boot what's on the hard drive from floppy or
CD? Does that work? If so, then you are real close, and you are right,
just making the right magic incantation over LILO will make it
able to boot directly from the hard drive. If the system won't boot from
CD or floppy, then try the "rescue" boot from the CD, and see if you
can at least mount the hard drive file system and see the files.
