There is nothing in EMC that is specifically targeted at Red Hat distros.
When I started out, I used SuSE as a base. As long as you are comfortable
with patch and make, almost any linux distro can be used.
If you get stuck, there is always people willing to help either on the IRC
channel or on the emc-users mailing list.
