Yes, that's right. These apply patches to 30+ kernel source files, then the
kernel must be compiled using the libraries that were intended for use with
these patches. That can be the downfall of the process, because some
distros
have different kernel include libraries.

rt-Linux is an old, and apparently ended project, so it won't be
available for
newer kernels. RTAI is a newer project that is still keeping up with new
kernel versions. They are somewhat different, requiring a bunch of ifdefs
in the EMC source to compile the correct calls for the right RT system.
