I would suggest that you put a meter across them and see what shows up there
when you apply power as you have been. If it's 120VAC (more or less) then
you're looking at another primary winding, and you'd want to put them in
parallel.

If that turns out to be the case, connect *one* of the wires to one of the
ones you're using now. Say for example black to black. Then put your meter
on the unattached wire (a red one?) and measure to the other red wire, with
power on (carefully!). If there's next to no voltage there then the windings
are in phase, and you can also connect the red wires together. If there's
about double the line voltage, then you have windings that are out of phase,
and need to reverse one pair.
