Hi Archie
General purpose operating systems suck at producing stable pulse rates at
high speed - Microsoft Windows is probably one of the worst offenders and can
not be relied on under load (aside from all the security bugs).
DOS can be fairly dependable, but it just isn't capable of doing
multitasking. Linux can do fast pulse generation, but it does have it's
limits.
It really depends on how fast you need the step pulses, and how dependable
the underlying Operating System is.
