My motors are NEMA23. Their dual axis, but have encoders on each end.
I hate to yank the encoders off, since they are installed such that
removing them would likely destroy them, but hate not having hand
wheels. I've been thinking of some ways I could install the handweels
while leaving the encoders intact. I got the steppers from
http://www.seanet.com/~dmauch/ but unfortunaly I think he's sold out
right now. I've taken a few passes at 6061 at .05" depth of cut at
5imp. I haven't even tried to 'push' my machine. At this rate, you
could cut a 1" square pocket with a 3/8" endmill in about ~15 minutes?
And this is probably being conservative.

I am using the Sherline supplied dual axis 130 oz in steppers on all
three of my Sherline 5410 (metric 5400) mill axes with rapids at 20ipm.
I plan to move two of those motors to my Sherline lathe, whenever I get
around to CNCing the lathe. At that time I want to put more potent
steppers on my mill.
I don't need to rapid faster than 20 ipm. I just want to be able to
remove more than 4 cubic inches per hour of 6061 aluminum by taking
bigger cuts or increassing cutting speed to something closer to 20ipm.
Are your 280oz-in steppers NEMA23? Are they dual axis? Where are they
available?
Any idea how long would it take you to mill out a 1 x 1 x 1 inch pocket
of 6061 aluminum with a 3/8 inch diameter endmill?
