Not necessarily a problem, just that you will need a pretty big UPS to drive
your motors.
Also, make sure that your controller power supply can handle being powered
by a UPS-most (or at least many) UPS's don't put out a sine wave, but rather
a square wave that "equals" the 120VAC sine wave in RMS power.
Some equipment will not stand this kind of a power source. Also, the square
waves coming out of the UPS will have a large amount of high-frequency
energy, which may get through your power supply and into the drive
electronics-again, tit is a function of how good the filtering is on your
power supply. Most DC supplies are not designed for filtering out HF energy,
because the designer plans on having them powered by a pure sine wave.
Also, your motor drives may or may not be able to cope with this stuff, if
it DOES get through.
Finally, I would think that if your spindle drops out due to a power
failure, you won't want your axis motors to keep moving. I would think in a
power supply situation, you would want everything to STOP.
If the spindle was powered by the UPS, then maybe continuing, and doing a
manual stop and shutdown would work.

I figured the power from the wall plug is dirty and if there is a
power surge or brief loss of power (which happens all the time to
our electrical supply) the drives would continue merrily along.
Does that make sense? The drives are powered by a separate
powersupply dedicated to them. Do you think there might be a
problem with plugging into a a UPS?
