There was a thread in cnczone a couple months back where a guy posed a
question as to whether anyone had successfully completed a stepper
conversion using camsoft. He said he had been fooling with one for a
year and still didn't have any decent results. The guy obviously
wasn't an amateur as he detailed checking outputs with a scope, etc.
There were lots of responses but with the exception of one post that
smelled like a camsoft shill ("yes I did one and it was easier than a
servo retrofit" but no answers to anything specific), most of the rest
were just guesses and things like "why didn't you use servos?". This
poster said he was losing steps even when the feedrate was less than 1
ipm. He also noted he had initially bought a "package" from camsoft
that included Anaheim Automation drives, and that they had croaked
during his attempts to get it working. He said the new replacement AA
drives (indicated some design change) hadn't died, but actually gave
even more performance problems than the initial ones.
I'm writing this because there are a lot of similarities in the
problems you say you're having and the ones this fellow was having.
The constant is the camsoft software. cnczone is a large forum, yet
there was no credible response indicating anyone there had actually
done this retrofit with steppers successfully. One post did indicate
there are large differences in using the Galil board for steppers
versus using it for servos, but still didn't have an answer. Seems it
would be simple enough at this point to see how the system works when
driven by Mach2. Everything else you have appears to be the bread and
butter items that others are able to get going with little difficulty
under Mach or TCNC.
