Try $25 cheap servo motor with encoder + $65 driver = superior
performance on a hobby budget. No more 8 inches per minute rapids
(unless you "like" to waste your leisure time with things like
watching water boil, or corn grow) = steppers, or lost steps =
steppers. The decision is much more toward the servo solution today.

This motor from Dan Mauch, or similar RFE's for even less from many
surplus dealers:

1)Globe motor 24VDC 1.5"D 2.25 L. Shaft has a ML style timing
pulley. Has a HEDS 5505 A encoder which should mean that it is a
HP/Agilent encoder 500 CPR two channels and draw 35MA. $25

I've got a box full of little Globe, RFE's with 250 line encoders
that I picked up for $7 each.

Plus this driver:

2) 30 Volt, 5 amp, Servo driver card with step and direction
control. DeskCNC SV-500 Servo Driver. For Brushed DC servo motors w/
5 volt, 2 channel encoders (like Agilent HEDS style).
