Fred,
In that instance (mini mill with fine pitch leadscrew) you are correct,
however, outside of that small cosmos, steppers are quite valid. In fact,
I'd welcome you to come over and take a ride on my 13' long gantry (~800
lbs) rapiding at
300 or so ipm, hasn't missed a step in 3 years. bet I can get those $20
servos to fault in 5 seconds
or less on my machine...:)
All kidding aside, there are instances where servos outperform steppers,
but when both are operated within
their limits (with suitable reserves for accleration) they can both
perform well.
