Mariss,

Not trying to say there is anything wrong with the cost of a Gecko
drive, I like em!!

But as you say a cheap drive is one that costs less than the motor.
For a machine running on motors from dead printers and for fun more
than production an ultracheap drive built on veroboard would be
neat. The PIC application note contains the circuitry to do drive a
motor and although I am sure it is not as good as a gecko especially
in terms of bullet proofness etc if you build it yourself you can
fix it yourself if you see what I mean.

You are producing a product, if you get it wrong the **** hits the
fan, a homebuilt item that needs mods is just that.

Not that I am saying it would be easy, if it were I would have done
it not just talked about it :)
