Yes, this is typical. What they really are telling you is that they
want to only
support one kind of user, they guy who buys a completely installed
system
from Comp-USA or Dell, and want to hook it up. They don't want
anything different, and would really prefer if they leased you the
phone
oops, I mean computer! yes, just like Ma Bell in the 50's, they want
everybody the same, then the can minimize the amount of training, etc.

Now, with AOL, it is even worse, as they want to supply you with a
crippled browser that keeps you from even knowing there are
services available outside AOL. But, people have found out it
is pretty easy to get around that, too.

Really, once the line is set up, and you know the proper username and
password, you can set up Linux to do all the things that are needed.
Everyone uses the standard TCP/IP protocols for all net-related
transactions, as far as I know. But, if your ISP were to use some
of the more common proprietary protocols, Linux DOES support
most of them, too.
