Gary,
I found out about the current limitation by accident. I was running a
differential encoder on one of my servos (powered from the Gecko and later
measured at 129ma) and it worked for a while. Then I started getting into
the same problems as you along with some others.

For a power supply, you can rob from a spare connecter on the computer
power supply or use a separate "wall wort" or something like that.
Be sure to read up on the required connections as there is a resistor that
has to be placed on the Gecko in order for this system to work. I don't
have the paper in front of me right now, and don't remember the value or
the exact connections.

Just for the record, I have run encoders up to 1000 line and they work
fine. The resolution is great at 1000 lines, but either speed will suffer
(depending on how fast you are trying to push it and how fast your computer
is).
