I too am beginning to build a machine using 1 inch silver steel bar but I am
also using recirculating ball bushings, as well as casting the majority of
"fixings" myself from aluminium, it is an up hill struggle
if any one is interested look at www.foundry-fopars.co.uk

Sure, you can make a machine work on drill rod and bushings. The drill
rod is not really round, the bushings will have slop in them (if not,
they wont slide) But you can make a workable machine.
Good is another question, and a VERY subjective one. If you want to cut
out simple parts, like balsa wood for models, it might be fine. If you
want to make steel 3D molds, its not likely to be 'good'
