I've tried that very thing in a low-cost automation application and the answer is no, due to binding. Round bronze bushings are relegated to rotational movement. They do not work well for this type of linear travel. The only way they will work and this is "iffy" is two bushings per shaft with a longer moment between them than the carriages center to center width. Limiting the travel of the axis. They way to alleviate the binding is use a ball bushing, then the problem is the balls travel the same path and will cut grooves in the soft drill rod. I think we get lured into this concept when we see a shaft being actuated lineally into a stationary detail with a bronze bushing. That works fine as long as the force is applied to the center of the shaft. But, hold the shaft stationary and try to actuate the detail back and forth upon it applying the force away from the axis of the shaft and it will bind. I've tried drill rod, cold roll and turn ground and polished with the same result.
